ABOUT THE ARTIST

DAKOTA PITTS B. 1989

Dakota Pitts is an oil painter following in the tradition of the 19th century realists. He has enjoyed drawing since childhood, but it wasn't until his mid 20s that he began painting. Recognizing the importance of the simple statement, Dakota dedicated the first several years of his craft to the fundamental skills of drawing. After studying the work of artists such as Edgar Payne and Robert Henri, Dakota developed an appreciation for strong composition and design. Eventually, Dakota fashioned his first pochade box out of vintage cigar cases and began painting the landscape and portraits from life. Through careful study of the subjects he paints, Dakota has developed his sense of observation and style. His works often combine his appreciation of the landscape and the expressive qualities of the human figure. Dakota enjoys traveling as much as possible, always looking for opportunities to make interesting connections between the environment and his subjects. Although still in the early stages of his career, Dakota is looking forward to a bright and productive future.
